Downtown Ottawa is the commercial and economic, entertainment, dining centre of the City of Ottawa. The business area sometimes called as the business district. It is built with modern skyscrapers, hotels and apartment buildings lining busy streets. The entertainment, shopping and dining area is the Byward Market or simply as the Market. The popular Elgin street also boast a great variety of pubs and dining establishments walking distance to both the Parliament and the Market.
Downtown is bordered by the Ottawa River to the north and the famous Rideau Canada to the east. There are around 5000 residents living in this area of Ottawa downtown. The most prominent building is the Parliament and other government institutions such as the Supreme Court. This area employs over 100,000 people main in office work environment.
The Byward Market or commonly the Market, is one the most popular destinations for tourists and Ottawa residents alike. Located just east of the government and business district it feels like a completely different community. Newly constructed luxury apartment buildings stand next to historic, century old homes. The popular farmer’s market is Canada’s oldest existing one.

There is an incredible variety of restaurants, pubs, eateries, and specialty food stores reflecting the changing cosmopolitan nature of Ottawa. Many small coffee shops, boutique shops and stores line the small streets around the market. Ottawa’s largest shopping centre, the Rideau Centre is also located here making this area a paradise for dining, shopping and entertainment.
